Homeowners will be increasingly looking for affordable but also green options in 2023 as they make their home renovations.

“Remodeling can be expensive, which is why I think people will gravitate towards using raw materials and textures, as they are typically less fussy and double as sustainable, eco-conscious options,” says Brit Angelesco, ZLINE executive director and in-house trend expert.

Here are a few of the top home remodeling trends for 2023, according to the experts: 1. Design Kitchens as More Distinctive Personalized Spaces Experts say kitchens are now becoming spaces to show off personal design styles and perspectives. Alexandra Yacavone, design studio manager, trend and CMF at Kohler says it gives “what traditionally has been a utilitarian and perhaps looked over space, a more curated feel.” Key kitchen trends include incorporating calming tones, such as water and botanical-inspired blues and greens.

“Warm neutrals that feel calming and create a sense of relaxation,” says Yacavone. “With a focus on personal wellness, but also wellness for the world. There are a lot of biophilic materials being used in this space like tactile woods and dynamic composites.” Angelesco also sees more neutrals, earth tones and matte finishes in kitchens—clay, terracotta, taupes and sages—due to how well these colors pair with natural, raw materials. Another trend Yacavone sees is the use of bold monochromatic designs in the kitchen. Yavacone says a way to integrate vibrant tones is to “choose a monochromatic color palette that feels playful yet curated.”

Kitchen islands continue to be a big trend, says Angelesco, as well as home bars as beverage centers and wine fridges “as people look to maximize their fridge space in their kitchen and make a bar area more of a focal point for hosting.”

2. Consider More Color and Calmness in Bathrooms The bathroom has become a place of escape and is worthy of an upgrade. “We continue to see color be important in this space, but we are also seeing this space being treated as a personal sanctuary, where you go to relax and rejuvenate,” says Yacavone. Key bathroom trends include the nature-inspired trend that incorporates tactile textures like natural stone and woods, as well as leafy green hues that “bring the calming feeling of the outdoors inside.” Another trend is the bathroom as a personal spa. “We are seeing more colorful but monochromatic gradients in metal that feel very dynamic but still calming,” says Yacavone. “We are also seeing people integrating colorful lights in the shower that give form to water to create a sensory experience.”

3. Mesh Indoor-Outdoor Spaces Bringing the indoors outside and vice versa is still a hot trend. “After years of being inside during the pandemic, we are seeing more people look for ways to bring the outdoors and nature into their home,” says Jessica Harris, designer and manager of production design at Living Spaces. She says in 2023 there will be more home designs incorporating more large-scale windows and replacing single doors with double doors to see more of the exterior when you’re inside the home and let in more natural light.

Retractable screen doors for large openings are expected to be a growing trend too. “More and more, customers are looking for ways to bring the outdoors into their home or living space. Large patio spaces, oversized or stacking patio doors are some of the most common ways to do so. Retractable screen doors are customizable and can keep a connection to the outdoors, without bringing in leaves and bugs.

4. Welcome Warmer Color Tones Brown tones are predicted to be popular in 2023. “I’ve heard people in the past say they feel brown is too traditional, but if you pair it with the right white, beige, terracotta or green, you can make it look a lot fresher and more modern,” says Harris. She says it can add dimension and calmness to your home, making it more inviting for dinner parties or wine nights. “One way you can incorporate warm brown tones into your space is by painting an accent wall, but the easiest way is through furniture. This can be done by adding a coffee table with a deep wood tone or even through side table accessories,” says Harris. Wallcoverings can be another option to add warmer colors to a space. York Wallcoverings predicts that the 2023 color of the year will be amber. Carol Miller, trend and color expert for York Wallcoverings says amber is really versatile and “rich like luscious honey; when paired with bolder colors, it quickly becomes a warm neutral.” Miller says amber is found across design aesthetics, such as in traditional style or contemporary style with oxidized metals. “It really is a color that can be embraced no matter one’s personal taste,” says Miller.

5. Create More Curves The curve trend was popular in 2022 but will be even more popular in 2023. Examples include curved kitchen islands, curved bars and curved sofas that favor softness rather than rigidity. “Incorporating curves is the most practical way to soften up sharp corners or harsh lines that might otherwise feel cold or uninviting,” says Harris. “They are interesting to follow and add a natural fluidity to any space. Not to mention, curved furniture also allows you to maximize the space instead of cutting any of it off.” Ways to add the curve trend to your home include using furniture pieces like a round mirror, coffee table, accent chair, sofa or rug. Incorporating the curve trend through your home’s architecture can also include trying a round garden, deck, kitchen island or even built-in bookcases. Bottom Line
